CREED’s 250th Year Celebration

Erwin CREED at NYC's CREED Boutique

Erwin CREED will tour the U.S. in fall 2010

As CREED’s 250th anniversary approaches in November 2010, special activities are underway at the world’s only luxury fragrance dynasty passed from father to son in an unbroken line since 1760.

Paris-based CREED starts the celebration in the U.S. with the exclusive, American launch of a spectacular, new fragrance called Aventus, inspired by the very idea of success. Aventus is a masterwork already being enjoyed by leaders in politics, sports, music and film. Aventus is available on this site and soon at Neiman Marcus coast to coast, Bergdorf Goodman and the Saks Fifth Avenue flagship store in New York City.

CREED began its 250th year by opening its only North American boutique at 794 Madison Avenue at 67th Street in New York City (1-877-CREED 44) and displaying there for the public some of CREED’s correspondence with legends and VIPs over the centuries.

CREED also launched this site to mark the anniversary year.

CREED & Charity

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

During its 250 years, CREED has been a loyal supporter of the communities in which it does business. As CREED is a very small, independent, family-run company that produces all of its products by hand in France, CREED’s support many times takes the form of a special item presented for a charity auction. For example, CREED flacons, perhaps signed by a member of the CREED family, offered with CREED shatterproof atomizers, are examples of such donations. Occasionally, CREED’s charity support takes the form of a financial gift.

CREED Travel Grooming Kit in black

CREED Travel Grooming Kit in black

It’s obvious that CREED leather kits, hand-stitched in France from Italian leather, are an attractive take-anywhere way to store shaving gear, shampoo, soap and, of course, fragrance. But how strong and durable are they? Tough enough for U.S. troops serving in Iraq.

In 2009, as part of our regular shipments of grooming goods, including soaps and hair-and-body washes, to U.S. troops serving in Iraq, CREED sent a leather travel-grooming kit to U.S. Army First Lieutenant Anthony Arellano, serving in a field artillery unit outside the city of Tikrit. Lieutenant Arellano kept his CREED kit with him for the rest of his tour in Iraq, which included many dangerous missions. CREED is proud the kit withstood searing heat and sun, rough travel, sand and sustained use in perfect condition. CREED is very pleased that Lieutenant Arellano and his kit have returned safely to the U.S.

From its durable handle to its double-zip compartments, CREED kits sized at 10 inches long, six and one half inches high and four inches wide are an ideal way to carry with you all your grooming goods — wherever in the world you go.

Sun, sand, stars and CREED. It’s a perfect combination.

As part of CREED’s 250th anniversary, this spring will be CREED’s first in the Hamptons, the famous, much-watched beach towns at the sandy east end of Long Island, New York where year-round and summer residents include top artists, actors, sports stars, broadcasters, politicians and assorted other notables.

CREED makes its home at Saks Fifth Avenue in Southampton, the quaint waterside village 80 miles from New York City. CREED is now available there 12 months a year.

CREED in Fashion Photography

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Even as CREED celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2010, CREED fragrances remain enduringly stylish. In fact, many fashion editors and photographers choose CREED to be part of photo shoots for magazines, newspapers and websites around the world. A few selections from recent years are featured here.

As you can see, CREED products shot for fashion pages range from classic CREED flacons (or 8.4 ounce decanters) and CREED Original Vetiver to CREED Love In White. On one occasion, a CREED family member, seventh generation Erwin CREED, took a break from work in Paris to be photographed for a full page in Vanity Fair, a rare public appearance.

Holiday greeting from Spain's Crown Prince Felipe & Crown Princess Letizia

Leisure Fuels Work for CREED Family

Erwin CREED Skiing

Actual photo of Erwin CREED skiing.

Both master perfumer Olivier CREED and his son, Erwin, maintain very active lives when not at work in their fragrance workshop in the French countryside. Many times, their adventurous leisure activities influence their creation of new fragrances for clients.

For example, CREED father and son are avid and competitive skiers, usually in the Swiss Alps. The CREED fragrance Silver Mountain Water by Olivier CREED is intended to evoke the bracing air and crystalline water of the Alpine region, including the towns of Gstaad and Zermatt. Even Silver Mountain Water’s white bottle and silver cap evoke this Alpine feel.

Father and son are skilled golfers as well. Oliver CREED served on France’s national golf team in the 1980′s, and his portrait hangs in a place of honor in the Fontainebleau Golf Club. His loving homage to golf is CREED Green Valley, a fragance that evokes the lush greenery of a fine course just after sunrise, when dew is still on the grass and wind begins to stir the scents of flowering trees and plants that dot the perimeter of play. Does CREED participate in Fashion Week — or the Academy Awards?

Preparations for Fashion Week 2010

Preparations for Fashion Week 2010

CREED is a niche, family-owned company, of course, and the focus of master perfumer Olivier CREED and his son, Erwin, and their staff of 35 people is the hand creation of fine fragrances for clients.

Yet CREED does offer a limited range of exclusive and fashionable accessories, including travel-grooming kits made from Italian leather hand-stitched in France, perfect for holding shaving gear or cosmetics. CREED also offers leather-wrapped shatterproof bottles, or atomizers, sized at 1.7 ounces, perfect for the traveling fragrance enthusiast. CREED offers clothing only in its Paris boutique and does not show collections at Fashion Week.

In 2010, CREED responded to a request to make a very small gift of fragrance to models participating in a major designer’s presentation at New York Fashion Week. The fragrances offered were CREED Love In Black, Love In White and Acqua Fiorentina. (more…)

How Are CREED Fragrances Made?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

How are CREED fragrances made? Are they still truly made by hand?

They are.

All authentic CREED fragrances are made by hand by sixth-generation master perfumer Olivier CREED, his son, Erwin, and a team of just 35 people working in a single location in the French countryside. Messrs. CREED design and compose CREED fragrances entirely themselves. The role of their staff is to bottle and ship the products of Messrs. CREED.

The small CREED team works in what resembles a collection of country houses near one another in the woods. The rustic buildings house the studio of Messrs. CREED, their offices, cold and warm storage, as needed, for natural ingredients from around the world and large rooms with vats for the blending and later, bottling, of fragrance.

When Olivier CREED starts to create a new fragrance, acting on his creative inspiration, he wears only that fragrance, day in and day out, as a key part of the creative process. He and his son discuss the fragrant composition, adding a note here, subtracting one there, calling upon a worldwide and long-established network of farmers and growers who supply CREED needed ingredients that range from bergamot to sandalwood. CREED fathers and sons have worked this way since 1760.

Even today, CREED has no fragrance production schedules, no timetable of fragrance launches, no scientists or laboratories creating fragrance, no test marketing and no consumer focus groups — all of which are very common elements of the global fragrance industry in 2010. (more…)
